#323 INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION “WHAT SHE FOUND” by Robert Dugoni.

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I began writing What She Found approximately one year ago. The first draft usually takes three to six months. But with editing, including developmental editing, copy editing etcetera the book is usually published 8 months to a year after I started it.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work?  And please describe in detail.  And can you please include a photo? I write here every day. It’s a large room we added onto our house with a lot of windows and a lot of light.

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I write directly on the laptop. I tell people that I think through my fingertips. It’s something I learned as a reporter in college and at the LA Times. You don’t have time to write out a story, then type it. I used to never listen to music if the music had words. The words would interfere with my thoughts. But over time I can listen to music if I keep the volume down. Writing is a solitary and often lonely profession.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? It’s always emotional and fun to start a new project and see where it takes me! It’s the start of a new adventure.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. I’m sure there were. It’s not deletions as much as it is editing and pairing down. Getting rid of excess words, anything that slows the story. This is a mystery so the prologue should be short, interesting and propel the reader into the story.
